Britannia and Eve first appeared in 1926 as Eve, a self-described ‘Lady’s Pictorial’, while Britannia was printed throughout 1928. Eventually, on May 1st 1929, the two newspaper combined to become Britannia and Eve with the new tagline ‘A Monthly Journal for Men & Women’. Each incarnation was printed in London.

Britannia and Eve contained general news articles, as well as sections dedicated to fashion, home, and short stories. It is a great source of Art Deco illustrations and advertisements, which were often printed in colour.

One contributor of short stories was pilot and author of adventure stories William Earl Johns, whose stories for Britannia and Eve included ‘The Quest of the Golden Fleece’ and ‘Bunkers’. Another writer who enjoyed success in writing short stories for this newspaper was Joanna Cannan, who dispensed wisdom through stories such as ‘Cleverness Isn’t Everything’ which had the tagline ‘There’s more ways than one to a man’s heart as every woman knows’.
