FOUR MEN DROWNED OFF LEWIS. STORNOWAY, 28th October.โ€”On Monday last, the 26th current, four fishermen from Long, a village about three miles from Stornoway, were drowned in Broadbay. It appears that a fishing boat, with six of a crew, were returning from their fishing ground in Broadbayโ€”having hauled their lines, and got a good catch of haddocks. There was a strong breeze blowing, and squally weather, and the boat had three reefs in the sail. About the middle of the Broadbay a sudden squall struck the boat, throwing it on its beam ends, and four of the crew were washed out into the sea, while two who were in the bow held on by the bolt-rope. The four men were seen struggling in the water for some time, making every effort to reach the boat, but, being to leeward and a heavy sea running, they were unable to do so, and shortly after sank to rise no more. The two men who held on by the rope were rescued in about a quarter of an hour after the accident by a boat which put off to their assistance from the village of Vasker. The names of the four men drowned areโ€”Donald Macleod (skipper), married, and a family of seven; Donald Smith, married, and four of a family; and John Macleod and John Thomson, both unmarried. The body of Donald Smith has been recovered, but none of the rest, although search has been made for them.
