Historical newspapers help us to understand our ancestors and the world they inhabited in vivid detail. From community stories to national headlines, they reveal telling moments from our shared past.

Why use newspapers for family history?

Imagine uncovering a report of your great-grandfather winning a ploughing competition, or reading a heartfelt obituary for a great-aunt you never met.

Newspapers offer insights that traditional records may miss. While a census might tell you that your ancestor was a grocer, a local newspaper could show you an advertisement they placed. You could learn what their wider community looked like and the role they played within it. You might even stumble upon something unexpected – like a report of a break-in, or involvement in a scandalous court case...

If your record trail has gone cold, historical newspapers may help you to fill in the blanks. Newspapers often reported births, marriages and deaths, which are useful for anyone tracing the milestones within their family tree.

With personal accounts offered in obituaries, photographs and more, newspapers add colour to your tree. They help you to delve deeper and understand not just who your ancestors were, but what their lives were like.

Where to find old newspapers online

Thanks to large-scale digitisation projects, many historical newspapers are now available to search online. You don’t have to rummage through dusty archives to find the stories relevant to you.

In partnership with the British Library, Findmypast holds the largest collection of British and Irish newspapers online. You can search the archive via the Findmypast website, narrowing down your results by name, keyword, date and location (as well as additional filters like date added and publication title).

Tips for searching newspapers online

Searching old newspapers requires patience and creativity, but once you uncover that sought-after gem of a story, your hard work will pay off. To maximise your newspaper findings, be sure to:

  • Try spelling variations of your ancestor’s name, as printers and reporters often made mistakes.
  • Start broad, before narrowing your search by date and location to avoid being overwhelmed with results. Area boundaries have shifted over time, so casting a wider net is a good idea before zooming in to the village or town level.
  • Be creative with your search terms. Don’t just search for names - use addresses, occupations or significant events (like ‘miners’ strike’ or ‘school prize day’) as keywords. Consider what terms will connect you with the stories you’re looking for and adjust your search accordingly.

If you can’t find your ancestor by name, broaden your search to look at local events, industries they worked in or the street they lived on. By understanding this historical context, you’ll build up a more detailed picture of their life. You may even stumble upon an unexpected discovery.

By exploring old newspapers online, you can go beyond dates and places to truly understand your ancestors - their challenges, triumphs, and everyday moments. Each article, no matter how small, is another thread in the fabric of your family story.
