Naturalization records are a valuable genealogical resource and can provide important information about your ancestor.

Foreign born residents who wished to become an American citizen would first have to file a Declaration of Intention with a local court, stating their intent to become a citizen. If the applicant has been a resident in the United States for at least five years, they may petition the court to become a citizen. This petition is the Naturalization.

After the petition was approved, a certificate of citizenship would be issued.
