This collection is brought to you in partnership with University College London.
The Jewish Year Book was published without major interruption between its first issue in 1896 and its discontinuation in 2015. The last edition was published by Vallentine Mitchell in association with The Jewish Chronicle (a London based Jewish weekly newspaper, which is the oldest continuously published Jewish newspaper in the world). The primarily practical publication functioned as a mixture of almanac, directory and community record for the Jewish community in Britain.
The volumes are packed full of detail covering various aspects of Jewish life. You can expect to find listings of synagogues, organisations, charities, schools and other communal bodies, often accompanied by contact details and detailed information about each organisation or institution. The volumes also included listings of notable Jewish individuals, which often detailed any professional positions and honours held. Lists of Jewish individuals who had won the Victoria Cross or the George Cross can also be found. The Jewish Year Book was also used for the publication of obituaries and details of major events across the UK and further afield. The volumes also included the Jewish calendar, which gave details of festivals, key dates and guidance on religious observance.
The Jewish Year Book also published details about the wider Jewish world. Lists of international Jewish organisations and information and news around global Jewish affairs can be found within the editions.
For those with or without Jewish ancestry, the Jewish Year Book is a unique and rich resource which allows you to discover more about the Jewish community from the late Victorian era through to the early postwar period of the 1950s.
