The maritime county of Suffolk is located on England’s east coast. Its county town is Ipswich. In the 5th century, the Angles settled in the region, which became known as East Anglia. The region was divided into north folk and south folk, which became modern Norfolk and Suffolk.

The Suffolk Marriage Index was created by the Suffolk Family History Society. The records date back to 1536 and stretch through to the twentieth century. Among the 576 parishes represented in this collection of marriage records is the picturesque town of Clare. Clare is Suffolk’s smallest town and the home to an Augustinian Priory, a castle, Country Park and the Ancient House Museum. This collection has 5,632 marriage records from Clare. Orford is another interesting town found in the records. It is an ancient fishing village and the home of a castle built by Henry II. South of Orford is Shingle Street, a hamlet of Orford and, according to local legend, the site of a failed German invasion during the Second World War.
