Since the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, Northern Ireland has been largely self-governing. Northern Ireland was formed in 1921, when Ireland was partitioned between Northern Ireland and the South of Ireland by an act of the British Parliament. Southern Ireland went on to become the Irish Free State in 1922.
