Search Cheshire Workhouse Records (Baptisms)

Each record contains both and image and a transcription of the original parish register for the workhouse baptisms. The amount of information varies but you can find the following information about your ancestor:

• Name
• Year
• Mother’s name
• Father’s name
• Baptism date
• Place of baptism
• Place of birth
• Poor Law Union

The 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act established nine poor-law unions in Cheshire, each with its own workhouse.

Workhouses were there for the able to work but unemployed and their relatives, the incompetent poor, the elderly, sick people, orphaned young people, single mothers and the mentally ill. Some people only stayed in the workhouses when employment was available, others spent their entire lives in the same workhouse.

These records cover babies born in the workhouses between 1880 until 1910 who were baptized in the Chester Union Chapel at Hoole.

Cheshire is situated in the North West of England. On the west it borders Flintshire and Wrexham in Wales with Merseyside and Greater Manchester to the north, Derbyshire to the east and Shropshire and Staffordshire to the south.
