What is a Directory?
In general terms a directory is an extended version of our current day white pages and yellow pages combined (without the telephone numbers). They list many thousands of people’s names together with their occupation and addresses ... but also so much more.

What information does Wise's New Zealand Post Office Directory contain?
The Wise's directories were known to be one of the most comprehensive in their coverage, covering the whole of New Zealand, not just the major populations, all the regional towns are included too. You will find details of many thousands of people, together with their occupation and residence. You can also find out more details about sex place in which they lived, the other residents in the town, and the services available in the region ... all of which help to paint a picture of your ancestors life. There are also directories for the legal, Commission of the Peace, medical, ecclesiastical, educational, pastoral and agricultural, and local government sectors.

What areas are covered by this Directory?
This Alphabetical Directory covers the whole of New Zealand, as does the Towns Directory. There are City Street Directories for Ashburton, Auckland, Blenheim, Christchurch, Dannevirke, Dunedin, Fiedling, Gisborne, Gore, Greymouth, Hamilton, Hastings, Hawera, Hutt Lower, Invercargill, Mangere, Masterton, Napier, Nelson, New Plymouth, Oamaru, Otahuhu, Palmerston North, Petone, Timaru, Wanganui, Wellington, and Whangarei– these list heads of the households house-by-house, and street-by-street.
