Find your ancestors in Genealogical Society of Victoria

Genealogical Society of Victoria

The Society was officially formed in 1941 and has grown from a handful of people to an organisation of around 6,000 members.

The Society’s collection contains approximately 18,000 books, 56,000 microfiche, 1,350 microfilms and many pamphlets, maps, periodicals, CDs, and computer databases.

They hold extensive material for Victoria (Australia), as well as records for other Australian states, and genealogical journals from around the world.

The Society library holds over 30 microfiche readers, eight microfilm readers, and 30 computers, which are available to library users. The library’s catalogue is available online.

The quarterly journal, Ancestor, provides members with general articles on family history, general genealogical information, and has details of new resources, events and activities held by the Society.

In addition to the facilities at the Society’s library, there are a variety of online services available to members. These include indexes of over four million names, podcasts of some of their weekly talks, research guides, and an expanded members’ catalogue.

The Society’s online store caters to customers worldwide. They also provide research services (available to all for a reasonable fee) to help you trace your Australian (and other) ancestry.
