Northumberland & Durham Family History Society
Northumberland and Durham Family History Society is a well established organisation, with a steady membership of about 3,500, it began in 1975. The area covered by the society is the pre 1974 counties of County Durham and Northumberland.
Much is on offer to researchers with interests in this north eastern part of England with monthly meetings throughout the area at Choppington, Gateshead, London, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Northumberland, South East Northumberland, South Tyneside, Tynedale, and Sunderland.
Presently, the society has 8 branches in North East England plus 1 branch in London. The North East branches meet monthly, and London Branch meets 3 times per year at the Society of Genealogists in Goswell Road. Our 8 local branches in North East England are located at: Alnwick, Blyth, Durham-Belmont, Newcastle upon Tyne, North Northumberland (Belford), South Tyneside (South Shields), Tynedale (Hexham) and Wansbeck & District (Pegswood near Morpeth).
The society boasts an extensive library and research centre in Newcastle, which holds large stocks of microfiche, and computer records covering the two counties, hundreds of parish register transcripts, as well as local and national histories and popular reference books.
Best of all are the Society’s own publications making local records more accessible to all, and the Northumberland & Durham Family History Society Journal, which is distributed each quarter to members near and far with its listings of their personal family history interests, articles about research, local history items, and general information on events etc. The website also gives details of the running of the Society, its publications, useful research services (members only), and much more. For further details on joining the Society, or general enquiries, please see the website.
