Born in Dorset, England in 1898, Maurice William Harris sailed from Southampton for New York aboard RMS Olympic on October 5, 1921. What can our records tell us about the life Maurice lived before he set sail?

The Harris family was a wealthy one. In the 1901 census, we can see Maurice and his two siblings living with their parents, four servants and an errand boy. The 1911 census shows that the family has grown to four children. The household staff, however, had shrunk to just two.

Maurice was 16 at the outbreak of World War I. During the War, he would serve as a Lieutenant in the The Duke of Cambridge's Own Middlesex Regiment. Maurice served throughout the War, leaving the army in 1920 as a decorated veteran, just a year before making the voyage to a new life.
