Which censuses are available on findmypast.com?

Findmypast.com has records from each of the England and Wales censuses taken between 1841 and 1911. All our censuses are complete, apart from the 1851 census, which will be completed shortly.   

Does the findmypast.com Explorer subscription give me access to the 1911 census?

No. To access the 1911census you will need to buy a separate 1911 census subscription or PayAsYouGo credits.  

Within the census records, what is a schedule number?

A different schedule number was allocated to each household, in the order that the enumerator visited them. As several households sometimes occupied one address, you may find several schedule numbers attached to a single address.

Why are some schedule numbers missing from the list of addresses on the results page?

Some addresses contained several households and each was given a different schedule number. The address search results will only reveal the first schedule number for each address. If you view the address transcript you will see every household and schedule number for that address.

Can I search the censuses by piece, folio and page number?

Yes. If you have the piece, folio and page numbers for a particular census page you can go straight to that page with our census reference search. When entering these references please ensure you select the correct census year from the dropdown list.    

Are there any parts of the original census documents that do not survive?

Yes. There are certain sections of several of the censuses that are known to be missing from the original documents. View a list of the piece numbers that we know are missing.

Where can I learn more about the England and Wales censuses?

The findmypast.com knowledge base has lots of information on the censuses.
