Changes In Name

Answer:

After the register was taken it was an active document that was maintained and updated by the NHS until 1991.

Different names for people at different points in their lives from 1939 to 1991 may be added. It was usually annotated when people married, divorced, were adopted or changed their name.

The way the register is compiled means that the person you are looking for will be known by their most 'recent' name.

This means that if a name has been changed, the name in the register will be their married or most recent surname with other or 'oldest' name in brackets within the same index.
