The baptisms included in this collection pertain to the township of Hanover, located in Morris County, New Jersey.

Despite being small in population, the township is rich in history. It was the first settlement established in northwest New Jersey. The settlement dated back to 1685 and was situated by the Whippany River. The name of the township comes from the House of Hanover, of which George I of Great Britain was a member. It was chosen as a token of respect for the monarch who was ruler of the American colonies at that time.

Hanover was a frequently used rest stop for Washington and his troops during the Revolutionary War.
