Essex Society for Family History

Established in 1974, the Essex Society for Family History is one of the oldest family history societies in England, with more than 2,600 members. The area of interest that it covers is historic Essex in southern England with the exception of the area now within the Greater London boundary.

Regular meetings, which are open to non-members, take place at Chelmsford, Colchester, Harlow, Saffron Walden and Southend on Sea, and the quarterly journal “The Essex Family Historian” enables members at home and further afield to enjoy general articles on family history, learn more about the area of their ancestors, and be kept up to date with events and all the services that the Society offers. Members’ interests are to be found on the excellent and informative website, which also contains details of the Society’s research services and their large range of publications.

The Research Centre is located at Essex Record Office, where it holds Essex memorial inscription transcripts, some parish register transcriptions, GRO BMD indexes, local pedigrees and reference material relating to Essex. This is open to all, including non-members, at limited times with a booking system.

Essex Family History Society is a registered charity (no 290552) and is a long-standing member of the Federation of Family History Societies.
